Admittedly, the actual monsters and scenarios didn't do much, though.

Silent Hill 2 I'd say was the least scary of that series. Which is odd, because for some reason everyone loves it, yet I'd easily rate it the worst of the four.

Thanks for the comments, both of you!Greg Tannahillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00823898295759037081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24434266.post-1161075398345101822006-10-17T18:56:00.000+10:002006-10-17T18:56:00.000+10:00Although I thoroughly enjoyed Eternal Darkness, it...Although I thoroughly enjoyed Eternal Darkness, it was far and away the least scary game I have ever played. It just didn't evoke any fear in me whatsoever. I think in part the art style was just not conducive to putting my mind in the right place. A bold attempt at a Lovecraftian style of horror, but I feel it should be possible to achieve much more.

I thoroughly agree with you that good horror is about helplessness, though, a point that my round table post dances around without stating outright. With I'd read yours before I posted it, but never mind.

Best wishes!Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07550565723765898399noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24434266.post-1161009158584936272006-10-17T00:32:00.000+10:002006-10-17T00:32:00.000+10:00Sadly, I think the actual game mechanics often tri...Sadly, I think the actual game mechanics often trip up otherwise fine horror titles. Silent Hill 2 annoyed me because the clearly outlined puzzle was getting too cludgy for me, killing my buzz. System Shock 2 started out as one of the scariest games I've ever played ... but then I stopped caring after too many unlimited creatures made exploration annoying instead of interesting, so on. Haunted Ground's hiding mechanic was awesome ... but it relied to much on pixel perfect control just to figure out a square was a trigger, etc.

Honestly I think as a genre for either fiction or games ... horror is one of the hardest to pull off.Joshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04260309971152360156noreply@blogger.com
