Chrono Trigger DS

Check it out - Square-Enix has a page up at http://na.square-enix.com/ctds/ showing a mysterious image of a clock, with the words "Nintendo DS" next to it.

Clock? A page entitled "CTDS"? It looks like Squeenix's cult hit Chrono Trigger is coming to a dual-screen portable near you! (It's worth noting that the clock's not a countdown - it's showing your local system time.)

I'm not sure which possibility I'm more excited about - the original game, a remake, or a brand new entry in the franchise. They're all filled with win.

All I ask is that they not commission any more art from Dragonball Z creator Akira Toriyama. His character designs make me cry bitter tears of frustration.

Since I'm on a comment spree here at the moment...

This news is interesting for me to see at the moment; I have never played Chrono Trigger (or Chrono Cross) and it has always been something I have regretted. The idea of a port or remake of the game is brilliant news if indeed true (which is what, 99.9% likely?) as it will mean I finally get to experience it.

But, what is it? A port? A remake? Not knowing this is - for lack of a better term - worrying me at the moment. Only a trivial worry but if it is say, a port, then I'm unsure how to feel about it. I mean if it is, great I get to experience it finally, but if it is just a port then is there any point in bothering, exactly? To make the game I mean. I would still hit it as it is one game I HAVE to play, but in a way I am hoping it is a remake similar to the Final Fantasy ones the DS has been seeing lately.

Anyway, useless ranting (or rather, gibberish) can stop there. Port or remake won't matter in the long term, what does matter is me getting to experience it finally and that's something I definitely look forward to.

From Square-Enix's point of view, it very much makes sense to release a mere port. Their Final Fantasy ports have done very impressive business, especially considering the minimal work required to bring these things to modern systems. It's a game that's genuinely as good today as it was when it came out, which isn't something that many titles can say.

A remake seems more likely, given their recent approach to Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV. However it's worth noting that there's already an enhanced edition of the thing that was released on the PS1 so they may not want to revisit that further.

Either way, this is a game that is well worth playing.

Well as I'm sure you know already, Square-Enix announced it officially.

Hopefully it actually makes it to our shores this time. If it doesn't, then I will import it because there is no way in hell I'm missing out on this game.

Random related question, is it up on the Virtual Console?

No, the only Squeenix game available through the Virtual Console is ActRaiser, although apparently the original Mario RPG has been rated and is on its way.

Squeenix has publicly said they can make more money tarting up their own games and releasing them at premium prices than they can by dumping them on download services. Which is fair enough, I guess.
